Researching Crime

Miss Rogers Introduction to Crime, Law & Society Yr 1 English 8 cards

Cards in this deck (8)

  1. 1Why is police recorded crime data socially constructed?Due to reporting issues, 44% of victims did not report to the police as they felt the incident was not considered serious enough & 33% felt the police would not be able to do much.
  2. 2What are some issues with researching crime? There are issues around reporting, ‘attrition rates’ & inconsistencies in police recording/classification of reported offences which has led to victimless crimes. Comparing rates over time is difficult due to new legislation which leads to new crimes.
  3. 3What is the dark figure of crime? The discrepancy between actual & recorded crime. Barclay & Tavares found that self-report/offender studies reveal only 3% of offences resulted in conviction or caution. Getting punished is determined by interactions, appearance, background & circumstances. Cicourel – officers stereotypes resulted in class bias, patrolled W/C areas more, justice is negotiable by M/C parents
  4. 4What else did self-report/offender studies reveal? There was more equal rates of offending between black & white respondents than official statistics represent. Certain BME groups are more likely to be stopped by the police, arrested, sent for trial, remanded in custody, tried in a crown court & given a harsher sentence.
  5. 5What does the Realist view argue? That the official record is seen as an indicator of crime, there’s a dark figure but it can be inaccurate & potential bias. They use measurement & estimation techniques, crime victim surveys etc. They believe that crime can be used as an objective measure of the state of crime in society.
  6. 6What does the Constructivist view argue? That statistics are constructs, they don’t give a clear objective view about how officials saw the process & how agencies responsible for crime carried out their duties. They tell us about the organisation than the phenomenon itself. Negotiated outcomes refers to the police's decision to record an incident as an offence.
  7. 7Why did the government begin to look elsewhere for crime statistics?Due to various potential biases in official records. The crime rate gives an index measure of crime being occurring in a jurisdiction & olice records are a key source but there are questions over reliability. Also, reliable stats were needed to assess the performance of criminal justice agencies.
  8. 8What do statistics reveal?Institutional racism; CPS more likely to drop cases against minorities. Police recorded 54,000 racist incidents 2014/15, CSEW estimated 89,000. Police recorded 38,000 racially aggravated offences, only 8,600 cautioned/prosecuted.
