Question Answer
What is the nervous system made out of? The nervous system is made out of trillions of nerves called neurons
What are neurons? Neurons are specialised cells that transmit electrical messages from one part of your body to another at a very high speed.
What are the electrical messages that trave around your body in one direction called? Nerve impulses
What do neurons contain? A neuron contains all the features of an animal cell including a cell membrane, nucleus and cytoplasm
What does the cell body contain and what does it do? The cell membrane contains a nucleus which is the main control centre of a cell.
What do dendrites do? Dendrites branch out from the cell body and receive messages from other nerve cell that are sent to the cell body
What are the three different types of neurons -Motor neurons -Sensory naurons -connecter neurons
What is motor neuron function? The main purpose of motor neurons is to carry messages from the CNS to the effectors.
What are effectors and what is its main purpose Effectors are muscles or glands that translate the message into action
What's the main purpose of a sensory neuron Sensory neurons carry messages to the brain and spinal cord from cells in the sense organ such as your eyes or skin.
Purpose of a connector neuron transmit messages between neurons and the CNS
How much neurons does the human brain contain? About 100 billion neurons
What is the volume of the human brain. 1200-1400ml
What are the two parts of the cerebrum? The left and right cerebral hemisphere
what is the insulating layer that covers neaurons? The myelin sheath
What does the Medulla do? The medulla controls vital functions such as breathing, blood pressure and heart rate.
What is a reflex action? A reaction where you do something involuntarily and fast.
Example of a reflex action
