Flashcards
Three mountains task
Cards in this deck (9)
- 1What were the aims of the study ?To what extent children take the view of others
Children’s overall system of putting together a number of different views of what they see - 2How many children were used and what was the age range of the participants?100 children were studied and the age range was 4-12 years
- 3What were the equipment used ?Three models of mountains with different shapes. Then there was 10 pictures of the mountains taken from different positions and then there was a doll
- 4How were the children questioned ?Ten images of the model were shown to children and they were asked to select the perspective that the doll could see. Place shapes to show what they were looking at and what the doll perspective would be
- 5How did children in the pre operational stage answer the questions? They could only see their viewpoint demonstrating egocentrism.
- 6How did children in the concrete operations stage answer the questions? They could see others viewpoints so the children were beginning to lose this egocentric trait
- 7What did Piaget and Inhelder conclude about egocentrism? That people who are ‘egocentric’ are selfish because they can’t see another persons point of view. The children in the pre operational stage were egocentric whereas the children in the concrete operations stage could see different viewpoints
- 8Weakness of studyThat the children may have found it difficult to analyse the pictures and may indeed recognise that the doll is viewing the mountain from a different angle but struggled to identify what picture = results aren’t reliable
- 9Strength of studyThey repeated the study with different children and provided detail leading it to have good results so the study was reliable
