Flashcards

The EM spectrum

Amelia Quinn Physics GCSE English 10 cards

Cards in this deck (10)

  1. 1Radio waves:Uses:
    - tv, radio, bluetooth
    Explanation:
    - they're low energy so they're not dangerous (therefore ideal for radio transmission)
  2. 2Microwaves:Uses:
    - satellite communications, cooking
    Explanation:
    - travel in straight lines through atmosphere, ideal for transmitting signals
  3. 3Infrared waves:Uses:
    - electric heaters, cooking, infrared camera
    Explanation:
    - food appliances using infrared glow red as electricity flows through, this transmits infrared energy that is absorbed by the food and converted back into heat
  4. 4Visible light:Uses:
    - fibre optic communications
    Explanation:
    - visible light travels through fibres from one end to the other without being lost through the sides
  5. 5Ultraviolet waves:Uses:
    - efficient light bulbs, sunbeds, security marking
    - in bulbs, UV waves are [produced through the gas in the bulb, these UV waves are absorbed by the coating of the bulb which gives off light
  6. 6X-rays:Uses:
    - medical imaging and treatments
    Explanation:
    - X-rays penetrate soft tissue but not bone, a photographic plate behind the patient shows shadows where bones are
  7. 7Gamma Rays:Uses:
    - sterilising food, treating tumours
    Explanation:
    - gamma rays are the most energetic of all EM waves and can destroy bacteria and tumours
  8. 8How are radio waves produced and transmitted?- they're caused by oscillations in electrical circuits
    - the frequency of a radio wave matches the frequency of the electrical oscillation (this is how they're produced)
  9. 9What can the changes in the nucleus of an atom lead to?Changes in the nucleus can generate waves, i.e an unstable nucleus can give out excess of gamma rays
  10. 10How can ultraviolet waves, gamma rays and x-rays be hazardous to the human body?- UV waves can cause premature aging of skin and can cause skin cancer
    - X-rays and gamma rays are ionising radiation- they can damage cells by ionising toms. Being absorbed by the nucleus of a cell can lead to cell mutations and cancer
