Flashcards
Correlational studies
Cards in this deck (7)
- 1What is a correlational study?Establish whether 2 factors are associated.
Occur between sets of observations known as a co-variable. - 2What’s a positive correlation?High values of one variable are associated with high values of other other.
- 3What’s a negative correlation?High values of one variable are associated with low values of the other.
- 4How would a correctional study present its findings?In a scatter graph
More likely to express the nature of the correlation & the strength of the correlation using a number - correlation coefficient. - 5What does a correlation coefficient show?A positive correlation isn’t more valuable than a negative correlation - just different.
The stronger the correlation coefficient - more likely the result is important.
0 is weak & 1 is strong. - 6What are it’s strengths?Used when experiments are inappropriate - unethical to manipulate stress & illness.
Provides valuable info on the strength of the relationship between the co variables. Powerful research tool before considering experimentation. - 7What are it’s weakness?Impossible to establish cause & effect between variables.
Can not assess non-linear relationships between co-variables.
