Question Answer
What is respiration? A series of chemical changes that take place in cells to release energy.
What is word equation for respiration? Oxygen+Glucose ---> Carbon Dioxide+Water+Energy
What is the system that takes air into your body and ultimately makes oxygen available to the cells? The respiratory system
Tell of the structure of the respiratory system: 1. nasal cavity 2. epiglottis 3. pharynx 4. larynx 5. trachea (windpipe) 6. lungs: a) bronchus b) bronchioles c) alveoli 7. intercostal muscle 8. ribs 9. diaphragm
What is your nasal cavity? The nasal cavity (nasal fossa, or nasal passage) is a large air filled space above and behind the nose in the middle of the face. Each cavity is the continuation of one of the two nostrils.
What are cilia? Tiny hairs in your nasal cavity that trap pollen, dust and bacteria using mucus. They also push mucus from your nose to your pharynx by constantly waving (back and forth).
What does the nasal cavity do? It warms and moistens the air that enters it.
What is the pharynx? A membrane-lined cavity that connects the mouth and nasal cavity to the oesophagus.
What is a alternate name for the larynx? voice box
What is the trachea? the windpipe is garden-hose thick tube with thin walls that stops itself from collapsing with cartilage-based rings.
What are the two tubes that trachea divides into called? Bronchi
True or False: The bronchi divide into smaller tubes called bronchioles. True
What are alveoli? Tiny air sacs that allow for rapid gas exchange.
Describe gas exchange: Gas exchange is the delivery of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream, and the elimination of carbon dioxide from the bloodstream to the lungs. It occurs in the lungs between the alveoli and a network of tiny blood vessels called capillaries, which are located in the walls of the alveoli.
What is breathing? Breathing (or respiration, or ventilation) is the process of moving air into and out of the lungs to facilitate gas exchange with the internal environment, mostly by bringing in oxygen and flushing out carbon dioxide.
What happens to your ribs and diaphragm (thin layer of muscle) when you breath in (inhale)? The rib cage is pulled up and out and the diaphragm contracts and flatten.
True or False: When you exhale, your diaphragm twists and your ribs move sideways. False
How does your body react to your sudden need for oxygen when exercise? Breathing deeper and faster and having you heart beat quicker.
Where does your body's energy come from? Food and oxygen.
How many times do you breath in and out daily? 20,000 times
