Question Answer
Define the following term: Energy The ability to make a change happen
What unit of measurement is used to measure energy? The 'Joule' (J)
How many joules does it take to raise 1g of water by 1°c (a calorie)? 4.2J
How many joules in: a) 5.6kJ b) 14MJ a) 5600kJ b) 14,000,000MJ
What are the 5 different forms of energy? •kinetic energy •heat energy •light energy •sound energy •electrical energy
What is kinetic energy? The energy of movement. Anything that moves has kinetic energy. The faster an object moves, the more kinetic energy it has. An example of kinetic energy is running.
What is heat energy? This form of energy comes from the Sun, flames, chemical reactions, electrical devices or even a person or animal. Heat warms, burns, dries, melts, and hot-air balloons rise.
What is light energy? This form of energy comes from the Sun, light globes, fire and animals such as glow-worms. Without light, the world would be a very dark, lifeless place.
What is sound energy? The energy that air has when it is vibrating. Your ears and brain interpret the vibrating of air as sounds. Sound comes from your voice, musical instruments, cars and power tools.
What is electrical energy? Energy that is produced by power stations, solar cells, batteries and lighting. Electrical energy powers your TV, phone, microwave and toaster.
What is potential energy? Stored energy possessed by an object.
What are the 4 different types of potential energy? •gravitational potential energy •chemical energy •elastic potential energy •nuclear energy
What is gravitational potential energy? The energy stored in an object above the ground. The taller the object, the more gravitational potential energy it has (e.g. the higher a waterslide, the more gravitational potential energy you have at the top and the more kinetic energy you will have as you go down).
What is chemical energy? Energy stored in substances and is released in cases such as your body digesting food (e.g. apples), wood products being burnt it batteries being used.
What is elastic potential energy? Energy stored in a squashed or stretched spring that is released when you let go.
What is nuclear energy? Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom. It is produced in nuclear power plants, nuclear bombs and stars, which in turn produces light and heat.
What is energy transfer? Energy being passed from on object to another.
What are 3 ways that heat energy can be transferred? •Conduction: when two objects are in contact •Convection: when heat travels via fluids to other objects •Radiation: when heat radiates from a hot object (as a wave)
True or False: In terms of energy transformation, using electrical energy (input) to toast bread has heat energy as its output. True
What is the law of conservation of energy? Energy can never be created nor destroyed. Instead, the energy is conserved as it is covered from one form to another.
