Emily Parker English 9 cards

Cards in this deck (9)

  1. 1How can you access each element in an array? Each element will have a number, often shown in brackets, to indicate the position within
the list. For example name(4), will be the fourth (or fifth if the array starts from 0) item in
    the array.
  2. 2Explain the terms ‘file’, ‘record’ and ‘field’ in relation to data structures.File: a collection of related data
Record: one line of a file
Field: an item of data that can be recorded for each record.
  3. 3What are the typical uses of a text file?Text files are used to store characters, which may be text or numbers, for later use. They are
useful for reading data into or writing data ut of programs, or for storing textual data.
  4. 4What are the typical uses of binary files?Binary files are used to store images, video and audio data.
Another common use is executable files, where the data is encoded in binary and will be
    executed as machine code.
  5. 5Identify two advantages of using dynamic data structures. They are efficient, as the amount of memory varies as needed.
You do not need to consider the memory allocation when adding and deleting individual
    data elements.
  6. 6Identify two disadvantages of using dynamic data structures. They give slower access to each element of data, as the memory location is fixed when the
    program is written.
They are less predictable to work with compared to structures that are a fixed size.
The relationship between different elements of data can change.
  7. 7Why are stacks and queues considered to be dynamic data structures?Because the amount of memory allocated to them can change as they get smaller or larger.
Note that it is possible to implement them statically as well.
  8. 8Identify two examples of: a) dynamic data structures b) static data structuresa) dynamic data structures
    queue, stack
    b) static data structures
    array, record
