Pickerel Frog Lithobates palustris or Rana palustris Toxic secretions are irritating! 2-4 inches long. Look for 2 rows of dark-squarish spots running down its back. Has a dark green and brown color.
Eastern Spadefoot Toad Scaphiopus holbrookii Skin is smoother and moister then other toads. Coloration is tan or yellowish to dark brown, without bold spots. They have yellow eyes with cat-like pupils. 2 lines descending from behind the eyes.
American Green Treefrog Hyla Cinerea It is green with a white, yellow or iridescent stripe along each side of the body. The length of these stripes varies and may not be present at all. Additionally, yellow flecks are often found on the dorsum of some individuals.
Northern Green Frog Lithobates clamitans melanota or Rana clamitans melanota Similar to Bullfrogs, but is smaller and has a ridge from the eye to midbody. Color varies from green to greenish tan to brown, but the upper lip and head are usually green. Adult males have a bright yellow throat.
Northern Leopard Frog Lithobates pipiens or Rana pipiens It reaches 4.3 inches. It varies from green to brown in color, with large, dark, circular spots on its back, sides, and legs, each spot is normally bordered by a lighter ring.
Plains Leopard Frog Lithobates blairi or Rana blairi A light tan color with greenish brown or brown spots that are not circled with white.
Spring Peeper Pseudacris crucifer It can be gray, tan, pinkish or light brown and has a dark X spot on its back, darkness depends on color. A dark line runs across the top of its head between the eyes.
Cajun Chorus Frog Pseudacris fouquettei Call is like rubbing your nail on a plastic comb. Lives in southeast Missouri, rare. It has three dark stripes down its back and a white stripe along its upper lip. Distinguishable from Upland Chorus Frog by range and genetics. It's stripes can be broken and appear as spots.
Upland Chorus Frog Pseudacris feriarum It is gray or tan with dark dorsal stripes that are narrow or broken into a series of dashes or spots, although some lack stripes entirely. They are nocturnal and very rarely seen outside of breeding season, during which males will have a dark throat. They live in the boothill of Missouri.
Northern Leopard Frog Lithobates pipiens or Rana pipiens A pair of parallel dorsolateral folds starting from the back of the eye and down the back, these folds are often lighter or pinkish in color. Found only in northwestern Missouri.
Spring Peeper Pseudacris crucifer There are dark bars on its legs. Croaks are very loud and the first signs of spring. 3/4 to 1 1/4 inches in size.
Plains Leopard Frog Lithobates blairi or Rana blairi A ridge of skin along each side of the back is broken toward the hind end, with a small section at the rear raised toward the back, this distinguishes it from other leopard frogs.
