Question Answer
What is Lustre? How a rock interacts with light. The quality and intensity of light reflected from the surface of a mineral.
What is Streak? The colour of a rock in powdered form. Mainly different from the rocks colour.
What is Fracture? Describes how the mineral breaks. The way a mineral breaks other than along a cleavage plane.
What is Cleavage? Describes how a mineral breaks. The tendency of a mineral to break along flat planar surfaces as determined by the structure of its crystal lattice.
What is Hardness? How hard a mineral is. A measure of the ease with which the surface of a mineral can be scratched, or of its resistance to abrasion (scratches).
How are Metamorphic Rocks Formed? They Form from immense HEAT AND PRESSURE.
How are Sedimentary Rocks Formed? When sediment (dead plants, dead animals, dirt, powdered rocks) is collected at the bottom of water bodies. They form layers due to cementation and compaction, these layers form on top of each other to form rock.
How are igneous rocks formed? From the cooling of magma or lava.
What's the difference between extrusive and intrusive igneous rocks? Intrusive igneous rocks are formed from the cooling of magma underground. Extrusive Igneous rocks are formed from the cooling of lava on earths surface. Extrusive igneous rocks tend to have a smaller crystal size compared to intrusive igneous rocks due to their quicker cooling time.
3 examples of Sedimentary rocks. Breccia, Arkose, Chert, Clay stone, Coal, Conglomerate, Dolomite, Limestone, Sandstone, Shale...
3 Examples of Igneous rocks. Pegmatite, Sovite, Basalt, Gabbro, Granite, Pumice, Obsidian, Scoria, Diorite, Andesite, Monzonite...
3 examples of Metamorphic rocks. Schist, Slate, Soapstone, Jadeite, Gneiss, Quartzite, Marble, Biotite, Serpentinite, Muscovite, Amphibole...
