Flashcards
Networks - Topologies
Cards in this deck (9)
- 1What is a star topology? All devices are connected to a central switch that controls the network
- 2What are the advantages of a star topology? If a device fails, the rest of the network is unaffected
Its simple to add more devices
Better performance than other setups
All devices can transmit data at once
VEry few data collisions - 3What are the disadvantages of a star topology? Each device needs a cable to connect to the central switch which is expensive
If there is a problem with the switch, the whole network is affected - 4What is a bus topology? All devices are arranged in a line connected to a single backbone cable. This causes data collisions.
- 5What is a ring topology?Data moves in one direction around the ring. Only one device sends data at a time and data passes through many devices before reaching its destination
- 6What is a mesh topology?Devices are either directly or indirectly connected to every other device without the need for one central switch. They send data along the fastest route from one device to another
- 7What is the advantage of mesh topology? There is no single point where the network can fail. If one device fails, the data is sent along a different route to get to its target
- 8What is the problem with the mesh topology? They are very expensive as you need lots of wire to connect so many devices together. However, wireless technology has made mesh networks more practical
- 9What is the difference between a full mesh and partial mesh network?A full mesh is where every device is connected to every other device
A partial mesh is where not all devices are fully connected
