C1 Polymers

Cards in this deck (12)

  1. 1What is a polymerA very long chain of smaller molecules called monomers
  2. 2What is the process in which polymers are made?Polymerisation
  3. 3Addition Polymerisation means...Identical monomers have been joined together in a long chain under high pressure and a high temperature
  4. 4A polymer is written as:A polymer is written as:
  5. 5What type of bond does a monomer need to have to become a polymerA double bond
  6. 6What are 2 properties of the following PVC - polyvinyl chloride polyethene polystyrene polypropene (I know this is difficult but you should be able to get at least 2...PVC - Waterproof and flexible
    Polyethene -Waterproof and flexible
Polystyrene - insulates and absorbs shocks
    Polypropene - strong and flexible
  7. 7What is a breathable polymer?A polymer that will allow air and sweat out of it but no allow water through.
  8. 8Why are breathable polymers breathable?Breathable polymers work by having a lattice will incredibly small holes in (polymer) combined with nylon to make it strong enough to be used. The incredibly small holes will allow water vapour to pass through but droplets of rain water are simply unable to pass through.
  9. 9How can polymers be disposed of?-Landfill
    -Burning
    -Recycling
  10. 10Problems with disposing non-biodegradable polymers are...-Landfill looks ugly, uses up valuable land and burning can release toxic chemicals. It is better to recycle any if possible as this means we don't have to use up more of our finite supply of crude oil.
  11. 11How are we solving the problems with disposal of polymers?-Scientists are developing biodegradable polymers that will not need to be put into landfill
-We are beginning to recycle more of our polymers
  12. 12Why are some polymers stretchy and some rigid? All polymers have strong covalent bonds between the atoms within the monomers but they have intermoleclar forces between polymer chains. These can be weak or strong. If they are strong the polymer has a rigid structure and also has a high melting point, if the forces are weak the polymer will be stretchy and will have a low boiling point.
