Flashcards
Waves and Sound - Definitions (Grade 11 Physics)
Cards in this deck (37)
- 1Perioic Motion*the motion of an object in a repeated pattern over regular time intervals
- 2Cycle*one complete repeat of a periodic motion (from a crest of a wave to the next crest in a wave)
- 3Period*the time required to complete one cycle
- 4Rest Position*the position of an object when it is not moving
- 5Amplitude*the distance from the rest position to the peak of the crest, or the rest position to the peak of the trough
- 6Frequency*the number of cycles completed in a unit of time
- 7Hertz (Hz)*the unit used to measure frequency
- 8Phase Difference*the difference between two waves that are not in phase
- 9In Phase*the motion of two individual waves vibrating with the same frequency and are in the same stage in a cycle
- 10Out of Phase*two individual waves vibrating at same frequency but do not reach the amplitude at the same time
- 11Natural Frequency*the lowest frequency an object undergoing periodic motion can have
- 12Resonance*when energy is added to a vibrating system at the same frequency as the natural frequency
- 13Wave*a disturbance that transmits energy through a medium
- 14Medium*a substance which a wave travels through
- 15Mechanical Waves*a wave that travels through a medium as a disturbance to that medium
- 16Crest*the highest point of a wave
- 17Trough*the lowest point of a wave
- 18Wavelength*the distance between two identical parts in a wave (from one crest to the next crest)
- 19Frequency of a Wave (f)*the number of complete cycles that pass a point in a given amount of time
- 20Transverse Waves*a wave where the particles travel perpendicular to the wave (i.e. - water waves)
- 21Longitudinal Waves*a wave where particles travel in the same direction of the wave (i.e. - sound waves)
- 22Resultant Wave*a wave that is produced by combing two or more waves
- 23Component Waves*a wave that combines with another wave to create a resultant wave
- 24Constructive Interference*when the resultant waves has a larger amplitude than the component waves
- 25Destructive Interference*when the resultant wave has a smaller amplitude than at least one component wave
- 26Node*a stationary point in a medium produced by destructive interference of two waves travelling in opposite directions
- 27Antinode*point where there is maximum amplitude of a standing wave caused by the constructive interference of two waves travelling in opposite directions
- 28Standing Waves*a stationary wave consisting of nodes and antinodes, produced when two equal waves travelling in opposite directions pass through one another
- 29Fundamental Frequency*the lowest natural frequency required to produce resonance in a standing wave pattern
- 30Fundamental Node*the fewest amount of nodes and antinodes displayed from fundamental frequency
- 31Overtone*all natural frequencies higher than the fundamental frequency in a standing wave pattern
- 32Angle of Incidence*the angle between the normal and the incoming wave
- 33Angle of Reflection*angle between the normal and the ray reflected
- 34Refraction*the change in speed when a wave travels from one medium into another
- 35Diffraction*the bending of waves around a barrier
- 36Nodal Line*a stationary line in a medium caused by destructive interference of individual waves
- 37Antinodal Line*a stationary line of points caused by constructive intereference of individual waves
