- 1Language GamesContent:
Wittgenstein
D.Z. Phillips
Strengths and Weaknesses - 2What is the problem with language? Many problems that philosophers have wrestled with have been caused by a failure to pay attention to language
- 3"Philosophical ___________ arise when ____________ _____ __ holiday""Philosophical problems arise when language goes on holiday"
- 4"Don't ask for ___ ___________ , ask for ___ ____ ""Don't ask for the meaning, ask for the use"
- 5What did Wittgenstein mean by the use?Wittgenstein noted that the meanings of words are not rigid and fixed. What is more important is how the word is used
- 6Language games and religious languageLanguage is like a game – within the context of the game, it makes sense, but for someone who is outside the language game will not understand what they mean
- 7Chess examplethere are rules in chess which govern the pieces, but the rules would not apply to other games such as football.
'checkmate' only has meaning inside the game of chess - 8Form of LifeA person's language is a window into the person's life
meaning of a word is how it is used
Therefore all language is meaningful within its own language game
scientist have science-talk as believers have God-talk - 9Is Religious language true?Religious statements are no different from opinion - there are two ways of looking at it
these statements are meaningful to those within the group despite the fact that the statements are non-cognitive
- 10D.Z. Phillips supportreligion is a language game, extending this to the claim that religion cannot be either grounded or criticised in reason.
He develops Wittgenstein's approach by arguing that some of the problems caused by religious language exist because we take language TOO LITERALLY - 11Challenge - Norman MalcolmReligious believers are forced to qualify their claim but cannot be proven scientifically
- 12Weaknesses - context!!Problem with context
if all language is contextual - then it prevents crossovers
for example - "Jesus rose from the dead"
I don't just mean this in a religious sense, but also literal, historical and scientific.
BUT PROBLEM - I'm treating this statement as if they were scientific - which would run into the problem of verification
