- 1Topic 2 Home and personal communication systems Exam questionsTopic 2
Home and personal communication systems - 2Describe 2 differences between fibre optic and copper cables for connecting to the internet (2 marks)Copper uses electrical signals; needs a repeater every 100m or so; limited in bandwidth; prone to electrical interference (such as lightning).
Fibre optic uses light; the signal does not weaken much over distance; it is not prone to electrical disturbance; harder to hack; high bandwidth. - 3A computer can connect to the internet using Broadband or Dial-up. State the correct boxes below to show whether the statement is true for Broadband or Dial-up This connection allows high speed file downloading. (Broadband or Dial-up) This connection does not allow you to use the house phone at the same time as being connected to the internet. (Broadband or Dial-up) You have to connect each time you use the internet. (Broadband or Dial-up)Broadband
Dial-Up
Broadband - 4WI-FI is a way of connecting devices. Give one advantage and one disadvantage of using WI-FIAdvantage:
Can use computer/device to work anywhere within range, can work whilst on the move, no wires, many devices can connect.
Disadvantages:
Hacking (if network is not secure, some areas cannot access WI-FI/lose signal/blackspots, runs down batteries quickly, interference/blocked signals, condone health concerns, not portable. - 5State one improvement for new developments in mobile phone services, FOR EXAMPLE, 4G technology could bring to users...Provides super fast internet access to services, allows faster downloading, can access the internet/games/shopping/e-mails more quickly, allows greater access to services/remote areas, allows comparison between 3G and 4G service access.
- 6State whether the statements are True or False about the Geographical Information Systems GIS can help you find the shortest route from A-B. GIS does not need to be updated. If you are lost, the GIS can locate where you are. The GIS only works in Europe.True
False
True
False - 7State two uses of the Geographical Information SystemsArchaeology, town planning, land surveying and agriculture.
- 8Explain the advantages and disadvantages of using Bluetooth to connect to devicesNo need for wires, many devices can connect automatically, signal only travels a short distance, may be hacked by others nearby.
- 9Jess wants to watch a video online. Explain why fibre optic cable is better than dial-up for this activity (3 marks)With fibre optic cables the video would arrive smoothly because of the high bandwidth available, whereas with dial up data would arrive so slowly that there would be long pauses while enough data is buffered to show the next screen.
- 10Identify 2 advantages in using wireless network rather than a wired one (2 marks)No wires to sink/conceal, can work anywhere in the office - even close by, easier to keep offices clean, fewer trailing wires to trip over.
- 11A company has a wireless network installed. Describe one reason why they might be concerned about the security of the data (1 mark)A hacker may gain access to the data network and steal the data.
- 12Describe the differences a user would find between using dial up or broadband to access the Internet (6 marks)Dial-up
Uses a modem, needs a telephone line, converts signal that can be passed along a telephone line, time is spent making the connection by dialing the number, data transfer speeds are slow, pages appear very slowly when browsing the internet, takes longer to upload files compared to broadband.
Broadband
Uses a cable connection or ADSL, can use the internet and telephone at the same time, much higher data transfer rate compared to dial up, can watch and listen to a video in real time, can download large music files in a shorter time, can use webcam services.
