10.4 Maintenance

Cameron Taylor ICT - A Level A level English 15 cards

Cards in this deck (15)

  1. 1What is Maintenance?Maintenance means making changes to the software until the end of the Systems/Software's Life Cycle. This is the most expensive development and each system must have maintenance on it in order to fix problems such as bugs.
Some of the things that may take place are things like, offering extra functionality of the software that was not previously offered and maintenance can be used to solve errors with the software and the final development takes up 40% of spending.
  2. 2Why is Maintenance needed? It is needed to identify bugs in software which may cause the software to crash.
If the user is dissatisfied with the program than changes may need to be implemented.
A new operating system might be installed so, changes may be needed for the software to work.
There may be changes in legislation so, the software may need to be altered accordingly.
  3. 3What is the amount of maintenance required detected by?Cost of maintenance
How well structured the software is
    Numbers of users
    Number of undiscovered errors
    Quality of the documentation
Skills of the maintenance team members
May be outsourced to dedicated team
    Needs a formal systematic approach
  4. 4What are Maintenance releases of software?Maintenance releases of software provide additional functionality and improvement of quality of the original package.
Also, its an opportunity for software manufacturers to provide patches of code that enables the software to work with the new hardware or peripheral devices, which were not around when the software was originally implemented.
Maintenance releases may be sent direct to the customer from the software supplier and this is why it is important to register the software online. Usually the maintenance releases are sent with a link to the software producer's website, which means the software can be added automatically.
  5. 5What are the Costs of Maintenance? How well structured the software is
    Numbers of users
    Number of undiscovered errors
    Quality of the documentation
Skills of the maintenance team members
May be outsourced to dedicated team
    Needs a formal systematic approach
  6. 6What are the 3 types of Systems Maintenance on large systems?Corrective
    Perfective
    Adaptive
  7. 7What is Corrective Maintenance? This is used at the beginning. This deals with correcting faults or bugs that were not detected during testing. The combination of new hardware and software can cause older software to crash.
So, software manufacturers often produce updates to deal with these issues and the updates should be installed.
    This ultimately:
Perfect - To makes as good as is possible.
Adapt - To make necessary changes.
Correct - To ensure that faults or problems are eliminated.
  8. 8What is Perfective Maintenance? This is the most common type of maintenance because it improves the performance of the system by allowing the user to add new features and functionality into the software. This extends the life cycle of the software and helps to increase the speed of the network as a result.
This also helps to meet client demands and improves productivity from the user as the requirements must be met for the clients demands to be fulfilled.
For example, when applications are updated on mobile phones.
  9. 9What are some advantages of Perfective Maintenance? This is used to extend the life cycle of the software.
Increases the speed of a network.
Helps to meet clients demands and this helps to create an efficient system designed for the users.
This contributes positively to the reputation of companies.
  10. 10What is Adaptive Maintenance? This is used when the ways of doing things change in an organisation. For example, there may be new laws or legislation, which means that the system needs changing to fit these laws and legislation acts.
Changes in the way the organisation operates or when the environment of the software/hardware changes may require a change in the system.
  11. 11What is Basic Versions Maintenance Releases? This can include: Adaptive, corrective or perfective maintenance. This is done automatically and the software patches are made up on mini code that solve particular problems.
In a business, they will upgrade the system at a specific time such as, when the system is at its quietest (nobody is using the system)
  12. 12What is Maintenance in Businesses? You have to have a distinct and systematic way that reports faults and these must be dealt by the maintenance team. This is usually called a “Ticketing System”.
You must have knowledge of the applications and the hardware that the software is working through. There has to be a set way of reporting errors between the client and developer team and the Ticketing System is usually done through a Form.
  13. 13What is an Outsourced Team? When you outsource a particular job such as, a maintenance support contract system to another external company outside the organisation.
  14. 14What are Maintenance Teams?Maintenance teams consist of technical staff and programmers who deal with problems with the software when they arise.
After a certain period of time, problems with the system will diminish and the maintenance teams will move away from corrective maintenance and will use adaptive and perfective maintenance instead.
  15. 15What is User Support? An organisation will usually have an offshored or internal help-desk system which deals with customers problems with the software/system.
If a problem continuously occurs on the help-desk then the maintenance team may need to make adjustments to the system to fix the users problems.
User Support allows developers to find out the difficulties users experience on the system and this will indicate whether the organisation need to focus on training on these areas or improve the user interface or functionality of the software.
