Flashcards

Metallic Bonding

Konrad O'Neill Chemistry Cambridge IGCSE English 2 cards

Cards in this deck (2)

  1. 12 or more elements cannot form a compound together We can only mix metals to form alloys.Metals have 1,2 or 3 electrons in their outer shells.
They loose these electrons to form positive ions surrounded by a sea of delocalised mobile electrons.
  2. 2There is a strong attraction betwen the metal ions and the delocalised electrons. this means they have high mp and bp and are strong. Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity because they have delocalised mobile electrons to carry heat and current.Metals are malleable. This means they can be bent or moulded into shape without them breaking. This is because metals are arranged as layers of metal ions surrounded by electrons. If beaten the layers slide over each other without breaking the metallic bond which is the attraction between the ions and electrons
