9. DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION - 2COOPERATIVE LEARNINGStudents become engaged with the teacher and the other students. Through this method, the ELL students are able to practice their English. The teacher provides them with interactive and meaningful activities, so that they engage with other students; all while learning and practicing the English language.
- 3EXPLICIT INSTRUCTIONTeachers here, identify how language is used in different activities and subjects. They then provide the students with explicit instruction and utilize it to practice with it. This type of explicit instruction allows the students to explore further and for the teacher to observe how they use this instruction.
- 4BACKGROUND SCHEMA BUILT AND ACTIVATEDTeachers build connections between the content which they are teacher and the student's experiences and prior knowledge. They also focus on expanding that learning background through activities which accommodate to their learning styles.
- 5ESL TECHNIQUES"ESL teachers advance students’ English language development with curricula addressing language proficiency standards, but also incorporating the types of texts, vocabulary, and tasks used in core subjects to prepare the students for success in the regular, English-medium classroom," as stated in page 20 of our book.
- 6COMMON CORE AND OTHER STATE STANDARDSTeachers provide instruction that is aligned with state content and language standards, such as the Common Core. This allows teachers to really measure the understanding of the students, to the material being presented.
- 7READING AND WRITING INITIATIVESTeachers help ELL students articulate their understanding in writing, often using sentence starters and language frames. As far as reading goes, teachers take the time to teach the students how to read and comprehend the text through questions; they do this by pointing to specific verbs and/or synonyms. Teachers also encourage their students to take notes when reading, so the they can measure their level of understanding of the text.
- 8TECHNOLOGYTechnology is a great tool both for the teacher and for the ELL students. Through technology, teachers are able to present the material to the ELL student in their native language, it can help with cyber-group learning environment, and it can help stimulate students, virtually, to all the topics being taught.
- 9RESPONSE TO INTERVENTIONThis is when teachers find different techniques and ways to change their instruction. Their main focus is to find ways to change in the way they teach, so that they can assure their students' success. Teachers have to keep track of the students' response to intervention, through any changes in behaviors, performances, and assessments.
- 10DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTIONThis type of instruction is customized to each students' needs. Teachers figure out a way to accommodate each students and their success. This can be done through visual activities/models, technology, graphs, peer tutoring, cooperative-learning, and./or native language support. Teachers avoid using textbook reading and lectures, and rather focus on a more hands on way to achieve student success.
