- 1What is an Operating System?.a operating system, the low-level software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as scheduling tasks and controlling peripherals.
- 2the basic functions of a operating system, are?Booting the computer.
Performs basic computer tasks eg, managing the various peripheral devices eg mouse, keyboard.
Provides a user interface, e.g. command line, graphical user interface (GUI)
the operating system has more functions but these are the basic functions. - 3what are three operating systems?S50—Palm OS 4.1,
iOS 5.0,
Windows 8.1. - 4What is a GUI?In computing, a graphical user interface is a type of interface that allows users to interact with electronic devices through graphical icons and visual indicators such as secondary notation, as opposed to text-based interfaces, typed command labels or text navigation.
- 5What are the advantages of a GUI?Advantages (only when it is properly built)
- it can be user-friendly and speed up the user's work.
- it can be more attractive for non-technical people.
- in general, it looks more professional (but this does not mean it is always the best solution). - 6What are the disadvantages of a GUI?Disadvantages
- when it is not properly built, it can be very difficult to work with.
- it generally requires more memory resources than a non-graphical one.
- it might require the installation of additional software, e.g., the "runtime environment" in the case of java.
- depending on the programmer, it might require more time to be implemented. - 7What is a CLI?The CLI was the primary means of interaction with most computer systems until the introduction of the video display terminal in the mid-1960s, and continued to be used throughout the 1970s and 1980s on Unix systems and personal computer systems including MS-DOS, CP/M and Apple DOS.
- 8What are the advantages of CLI?The CLI offers users immense flexibility in that a single command can be executed with a variety of arguments, but the effectiveness is in direct proportion to how many commands and arguments for a command that the user is aware of. A user obviously cannot execute a command if they don't know it exists.
- 9What are the disadvantages of CLI?1. Lots to learn
2. Not GUI (Graphic User Interface), or in other words, it's not beautiful.
3. Many of the advantages are mainly for Linux, not so much for Windows. - 10What is the definition of application software?Application software can be divided into two general classes: systems software and applications software. Applications software (also called end-user programs) include such things as database programs, word processors, Web browsers and spreadsheets.

- 11What is the definition of system software?System software is a type of computer program that is designed to run a computer's hardware and application programs. If we think of the computer system as a layered model, the system software is the interface between the hardware and user applications.

- 12What is a Anti Virus?software designed to detect and destroy viruses within the computer.
- 13What is spyware protection?Anti-spyware software programs can be used solely for detection and removal of spyware software that has already been installed into the computer. This kind of anti-spyware can often be set to scan on a regular schedule.
- 14What is firewalls?to protect a network or system from unauthorized access with a firewall.
- 15What is disk formatting?Disk formatting is the process of preparing a data storage device such as a hard disk drive, solid-state drive, floppy disk or USB flash drive for initial use. In some cases, the formatting operation may also create one or more new file systems.
- 16What is a file transfer?File transfer is a generic term for the act of transmitting files over a computer network like the Internet. There are numerous ways and protocols to transfer files over a network.
- 17What is de-fragmentation?In the maintenance of file systems, defragmentation is a process that reduces the amount of fragmentation. It does this by physically organizing the contents of the mass storage device used to store files into the smallest number of contiguous regions fragments.
