Cards in this deck (5)
- 1Under the normal mode of operation, a process may utilize a resource in only the following sequence:Request: The process requests the resource.
Use: The process can operate on the resource
Release: The process releases the resource. - 2A deadlock situation can arise if the following four conditions hold simultaneously in a system:Mutual exclusion
Hold and wait
No preemption
Circular wait - 3We can deal with deadlocks in one of three ways:• Use a protocol to prevent or avoid deadlocks
• Allow the system to enter a deadlocked state, detect it, and recover
• Ignore the problem altogether - 4Deadlock PreventionProvides a set of methods to ensure that at least one of the necessary conditions cannot hold.
- 5Deadlock AvoidanceRequires that the operating system be given additional information in advance concerning which resources a process will request and use during its lifetime. With this additional knowledge, the operating system can decide for each request whether or not the process should wait.
