Skeletal trauma: a modification in cortical and/or trabecular bone as a result of a slow and/or rapid-loaded impact with an object. |
What is a fracture? | The result of any traumatic event that leads to a complete or partial break of a bone |
Acute fracture categories | 1. Fractures (partial/complete break) 2. Abnormal dislocation of bones 3. Disruption in nerve/blood supply 4. Artificially induced abnormal shape (i.e.- skull deformation) |
Non-acute fracture categories | 1. Fatigue (stress) fracture = abnormal stress on normal bone 2. Pathological (insufficiency) fractures = normal stress on abnormal bone |
Fracture types (see image) | 1. Transverse 2. Oblique 3. Spiral 4. Comminuted 5. Greenstick 7. Traction 8. Compression 9. Closed 10. Open |
Fracture healing stages | 1. Cellular- fracture closure, callus present, woven bone formed 2. Metabolic- woven bone transitioning into lamellar bone 3. Mechanical- realignment and remodelling of bone 4. Non-union |
