Define trauma vs skeletal trauma Trauma: application of force to the human body causing damage, irritation or inflammation of soft and hard tissues. Can be accidental or non-accidental. Skeletal trauma: a modification in cortical and/or trabecular bone as a result of a slow and/or rapid-loaded impact with an object.
What is a fracture? The result of any traumatic event that leads to a complete or partial break of a bone
Acute fracture categories 1. Fractures (partial/complete break) 2. Abnormal dislocation of bones 3. Disruption in nerve/blood supply 4. Artificially induced abnormal shape (i.e.- skull deformation)
Non-acute fracture categories 1. Fatigue (stress) fracture = abnormal stress on normal bone 2. Pathological (insufficiency) fractures = normal stress on abnormal bone
Fracture types (see image) 1. Transverse 2. Oblique 3. Spiral 4. Comminuted 5. Greenstick 7. Traction 8. Compression 9. Closed 10. Open
Fracture healing stages 1. Cellular- fracture closure, callus present, woven bone formed 2. Metabolic- woven bone transitioning into lamellar bone 3. Mechanical- realignment and remodelling of bone 4. Non-union
