Question Answer
What are the three parts of the xylem tissue? Xylem vessel Fibres Xylem parenchyma
What is the xylem vessel? Columns of fused, hollow, dead cells
What do xylem vessels transport? Water and mineral ions up the plant
What are the fibres made of in the xylem tissue? Long dead cells with thick cell walls
What do the fibres do? Provide support
What is the xylem parenchyma? Living cells that form packing tissue and stores food
Why has the xylem parenchyma adapted to have a bitter taste? To protect against insects tryong to eat it
Why does the xylem vessels have an empty lumen? So that nothing can impead the flow of water and mineral ions
What are the two funtions of lignin? -Prevents the xylem vessel from collapsing inwards -Lignin allows for adhesionof water molecules
What do pits allow for? They allow for water to flow between xylem and plant
What does phloem transport? Assimilates
What are the two parts of phloem tissue? Sieve tube elements Companion cells
What does parenchyma do? Fills up spaces in the cells
What is the function of fibres in the phloem? Support
What part of the phloem is a column where the assimilates go? Sieve tube
What is the function of the companion cell? To carry out metabolic reactions for transport
One of either the companion cell or sieve tube contain more of specific organelles. Which part has more of what organelles? The companion cell contains more mitochondria and rough endoplasmic reticulum to carry out metabolic reactions for transport, such as aerobic respiration
Are the sieve tube walls lignified? NO
How are the companion cell ad sieve tube connected? Plasmodesmata
How is the companion cell adapted to increase transport? The cell surface membrane infolds to increase surface area for more respiration
Does phloem contain pits? Nope
In what direction does phloem transport assimilates around the plant? Up or down (from source to sink)
What is cambium? A layer of meristem cells capable of making xylem and phloem
