Motion Graphs Physics Review
Cards in this deck (8)
- 1DistanceThe total length traveled from one point to another in a total trip.
- 2Displacement (ΔX)This is the difference in position from the starting position and the final position of an object. The units are meters (m) and this is a vector so it can be positive (+) or negative (-).
- 3Speed (S)This isn't the same as velocity. It is similar because it is how fast an object moves across specific length of distance or Distance over time. The units are Meters/seconds (m/s)
- 4Velocity (V)This is the change in DISPLACEMENT of an object (ΔX) over the change in time (Δt).
- 5Acceleration (a)This is the rate at which the velocity of an object changes over a specif amount of time. And it points in the same direction as the net force of the object. The Units are Meters/Seconds^2 (m/s^2): change in velocity over time.
- 6Position VS. time graphsThe value of the graph give the position (x). The slope is the velocity of the object, and if it is a forward slash (/) than it moves in the positive direction; while if the slope is a backslash (\) than the object is moving in the negative direction. The curve (if it looks like a smile) has a positive (+) acceleration and the curve (if it looks like a frown) has a negative acceleration and when the slope is constant (it has straight line or angled line slope) than the object will have no acceleration. And the steeper the slope, the faster the object moves.
- 7Velocity VS. time graphsThe value of the graph gives the velocity (V) of the object. The direction of the object's motion is the sign on the vertical axis. The slope of the graph gives the acceleration. The area under the curve (or slope of the graph) to the horizontal axis gives the displacement, or how far the object moves. The location the object can't be determined by the graph only how far from its starting position.
- 8Acceleration VS. time graphsThe value of the graph gives the acceleration (a) of the object. The area under the curve (or the slope of the graph) the horizontal axis gives the change in the velocity of the object.
