Symmetric Key Encryption

Aaron A Hamilton English 4 cards

Cards in this deck (4)

  1. 1Definition of Symmetric Key EncryptionAn encryption scheme where for each pair (e,d) it is easy to determine d knowing only e and to determine e from d, so in practice e=d
  2. 2Requirement (Strong encryption algorithm)- The attacker knows the algorithm and has access to one or more cipher texts and still not be able to find the key or plain text.
    - Attacker should not be able to decrypt the cipher text or find key, even if in possesion of cipher text and plaintext pairs
  3. 3Requirement(sender/receiver keeps key safe in transmission)If someone can discover the key and knows the algorithm, all communication using this key is readable.
  4. 4Requirement (Algorithm can be public)- We assume that the cipher text can not be decrypted with knowledge of the alogorthim
    - Symmetric key encryption is practical for widespread use (low cost chip of encryption algorithms)
