CPU and Memory Revision Cards
Cards in this deck (33)
- 1What does RAM stand for?Random Access Memory
- 2What does ROM stand for?Read Only Memory
- 3What does CPU stand for?Central Processing Unit
- 4What are the three main parts of the CPU?The CU, ALU and Cache
- 5What does CU stand for?Control Unit
- 6What does ALU stand for?Arithmetic Logic Unit
- 7What cycle does the CPU use to carry out instructionsFetch-Decode-Execute Cycle
- 8What two main parts in the Von Neumann architecture are in the registers? The MAR and MDR
- 9What does MAR stand for?Memory Address Register
- 10What does MDR stand for?Memory Data Register
- 11What does the MAR hold?Any memory address about to be used by the CPU during an instruction. The address might point to data or a CPU instruction.
- 12What does the MDR hold? The actual data or instruction. This may have been fetched from memory, or be waiting to be written to memory.
- 13What is one of the main feature of the Von Neumann architecture relating to both the data and instructionsThe memory; as in the Von Neumann architecture it only uses one memory for both the data and instruction.
- 14What are the different levels of cache memory known asL1, L2 and L3.
- 15What is significant about L1?L1 is the quickest but has the lowest capacity out of all the levels.
- 16What is significant about L3?L3 is the slowest but can hold the most.
- 17In what way is the cache better than RAM?It is faster.
- 18What is the RAM used as?The main memory in a computer.
- 19Is RAM volatile or non-volatile?Volatile
- 20What is volatile memoryVolatile memory is temporary memory. It requires power to retain its data.
- 21What is non-volatile memoryNon-volatile memory is permanent memory - it keeps its contents even when it has no power.
- 22Virtual Memory is what type of storage? Primary or secondary?Secondary
- 23What is virtual memory used as?Extra RAM as all computers have a limited amount of RAM so if it is full the computer can use virtual memory to store application data.
- 24What three things does CPU performance depend on?Clock speed, Cores and Cache.
- 25When a computer boots up what occurs with the operating system? It is copied from secondary storage to RAM.
- 26What is ROM used for upon a boot up?It is used to tell the CPU how to boot up.
- 27What is special about ROM?It can only be read to, you can't write to it.
- 28What component does the GPU help and what for?It helps the CPU process images.
- 29The more cores a CPU has, the more...Instructions it can carry out at once.
- 30What are some of the risks of overclocking a CPU if not done properly? The CPU can overheat, causing crashes or permanent damage to the system.
- 31What is the main job of the CU?To execute program instructions by following the fetch-decode-execute cycle.
- 32What is the main job of the ALU?To complete simple sums and calculations as well as logic operations, e.g. AND, OR and NOT and binary shifts.
