16. Data Security and Integrity Processes

Scott Jones Computer Science A Level English 23 cards

Cards in this deck (23)

  1. 1Key Terms- Hacking
    - Malware
    - Contingency
    - Redundant Server
  2. 2What are the two general threats to a computer system?Internal Threats
    External Threats
  3. 3What types of actions fall under these two threats?Internal - Accidental damage, disgruntled employees
    External - Hacking, Malware, Natural Disasters
  4. 4What is hacking?Gaining unauthorised access to a computer/network
  5. 5What are the three 'hats' of hackers?- Black hat
    - Grey hat
    - White hat
  6. 6What do these three types of hacking entail?Black hat - Gaining access to a system with malicious intent (installing malware, deleting files e.t.c)
    White hat - Attempting to expose the flaws in network security (employed by the company)
    Grey hat - Attempting to expose the flaws in network security with the hopes of getting employed
  7. 7What are hacker's most common motivations?- Politics
    - Finance
    - Intent to damage
  8. 8What is malware?Malicious Software
  9. 9What is a virus?- Malware
    - Spreads
    - Installs payload
    - Vectors -> Email, comp. websites
  10. 10What is a trojan?Like a virus, but seems innocuous
  11. 11What is spyware?- Records keystrokes
    - Tracks programs
    - Identity theft
    - Vectors -> virus
  12. 12What is scareware?- Pop-ups e.g. "system is compromised"
    - Scares user
    - Promotes malware to the user
    - Vector -> comp/websites
  13. 13What is ransomware?- Locks data/files away or threat to publish data
    - Controls webcam
    - Requests ransom for unlocking
    - Vectors -> virus
  14. 14What is a botnet?- Creates backdoor
    - Used to gain unauthorised access
    - Group of machines -> DDOS
    - Vectors -> virus
  15. 15What is accidental damage?Damage which occurs due to human error
  16. 16What is malicious damage?Damage which is caused on purpose
  17. 17What are the methods that can be used to prevent these types of damage?- Company policy
    - Strong passwords
    - Levels of access
    - Locking stations when out-of-use
    - Destroying hard copies of files
  18. 18What are levels of access?Users have varying access:
    - Some can only read files
    - Some can read and write
    - Others can't see the files at all
    Less chance of damage ∵ fewer people have access
  19. 19What is a contingency plan?- Preparation for data loss
    - Help recover after an attack
  20. 20What are the methods used in a contingency plan?- Server backups
    - Redundant servers
    - Key personnel transfer
  21. 21How does a server backup help recover after data is lost?- Data <-- backup
    - Backup regularly
  22. 22What is a redundant server and how does it help recover after data is lost?A spare server that is kept off-site and offline
    Help by:
    - Turned on after the attack
    - Keeps business flowing
    - Limits downtime
  23. 23What is key personnel transfer and how does it help recover after data loss?Moving key workers to a new site
    Helps by:
    - Key workers -> server
    - Maintain server
