Flashcards
Systems architecture
Cards in this deck (15)
- 1What does the PC (Program counter) do?Stores the location of the next instruction in a program waiting to be fetched.
- 2What is Von Neumann architecture? It describes a system where the CPU runs programs stored in memory.
- 3What is an embedded system? They are dedicated systems that are designed for a fixed purpose, a system within a large system.
- 4Name 3 embedded systems.Washing machine, car park barriers, microwaves, car engines, MP3s.
- 5What is cache memory?Small temporary memory, stores frequently used instructions.
- 6What is cache memory? The holding area for data from the RAM.
- 7What does FDE stand for?Fetch, decode, execute, cycle
- 8What happens at the Fetch part of the FDE cycle? The processor checks the program counter to see which instruction to run next. The program counter gives an address value of of where the next instruction is. The processor fetches the instruction from this memory location.
- 9What happens at the 'decode' part of the FDE cycle? The instructions are decoded in the ALU, Storing the result in the CIR
- 10What happens at the 'Execute' part of the FDE cycle? The instruction is performed. The processor goes back to the program counter to find the next instruction. The cycle is repeated until the program ends.
- 11What are the 4 registers?Memory address (MAR), Memory data register (MDR), Accumulator and Current instruction register (CIR)
- 12What does the MAR do?Stores the location fro data to be fetched from or sent to memory
- 13What does the MDR do?Stores the data that has been fetched from or is waiting to be sent to memory.
- 14What does the accumulator do?Stores the result of the calculation performed by the ALU.
- 15What does the CIR do?Stores the instruction ready to be decoded by the ALU.
