Flashcards
UNIT 1: FLUIDS
Cards in this deck (27)
- 1What is a fluid?A fluid is a liquid or gas. That has no definite shape, and is free to flow
- 2How do fluids flow? The particles within a fluid have spaces between them allowing other particles to go through, around and above other particles. Constant movement.
- 3Examples of Fluids/uses.Animals use fluids for flight
Plants use fluid for photosynthesis
Humans use fluids for cooking - 4Are there fluids in our body?Blood-used as a transport system
Oxygen- to breath
Stomach acid- to deconstructions food - 5What is the atmosphere? It is all the air on earth
- 6What is the hydrosphere? It is all the water found on earth.
- 7What is adhesion? When particles of one fluid stick to particles of a different surface.
- 8What is cohesion?Cohesion is when particles of a fluid stick to particles within the same fluid.
- 9What is Compressibility?it is when particles are flattened, or squished.
Air is more compressible than water. - 10Laminar FlowIs the smooth flow of fluids.
- 11Turbulent flowIs the choppy/bumpy flow of fluids.
- 12Why do we use a science journal? To organize data, thoughts and ideas.
- 13Hydrophobic Sandis 'afraid' of water. It does not get wet.
- 14meniscusis the little curve that appears when a fluid is in a container. It forms because the outer particles stick to the outside of the container(adhesion)
- 15surface tensionIs the bond that the top particles of a fluid form.
- 16Wetting agentHelps break the surface tension. Examples are fire retardant, and soap
- 17Fair testOnly one variable is changed at a time. At least one has to stay the same so the data comes out.
- 18HypothesisIs the guess done prior to the expirement
- 19ProcedureStep by step of how the experiment is done. specific.
- 20Manipulated variableThe changed variable
- 21Measured variablethe outcome we measure
- 22Controled variableThe variable kept the same.
- 23Flow rateIs the measure of how fast the fluid flows
the volume divided by the time - 24ViscosityThe thickness of a fluid
- 25dragIt slows down an air craft normally before landing. Ailerons
- 26Golf ball dimplesThey have dimples so the air is stuck to the ball causing laminar flow so it goes farther and longer in the air.
