Flashcards
Topologies
Cards in this deck (5)
- 1Point-to-PointTwo hosts are directly connected, no other hosts can see the information they are sharing. Serial communication generally uses this.
- 2StarA host that has multiple connections to another, sometimes called hub and spoke. Traffic must be sent through a central device like a host. Ethernet is star-wired.
- 3RingWhen hosts are connected sequentially. Not a physical circle, but a logical circle. Fibre Distributed Data Interface (FDDI) and Token Ring are some examples.
- 4BusUses a single coaxial cable, hosts are connected at intervals. Term comes form an electrical bus, which is a point from which electrical power can be drawn for multiple connections. Ethernet that uses a coaxial cable creates a bus topology.
- 5MeshHas multiple p-to-p connections that connect locations. No central point, data can just be sent. There are more options for sending if one fails. (Expensive and complex)
