Flashcards

Software translators 4.6

Ed Allen English 7 cards

Cards in this deck (7)

  1. 1Machine codeExact 1s and 0s.
    made of two parts:
A binary value that represents an instruction (called an opcode)
The data in binary form (called an operand)
  2. 2Low level codeLow level code is executed directly by the computer
Low level code only works on the processor it was written for
There are two types of low level code:
Machine code is written entirely in binary
Assembly is written with words representing each binary command
  3. 3InterpreterAn interpreter does not create a new file.
It is used to execute the source code directly.
It translates and executes the high level code line by line.
Both python and scratch are interpreted languages.
  4. 4CompilerA compiler takes the code and translates it all in one go, creating a new executable file at the end.
This file contains only machine code, the original high level code is not included.
This file can be executed directly by the computer.only be run on the processor it was compiled for.
  5. 5Advantages of compilerSpeed – a compiled program will run much faster, as all the translation has already been done.
Security – you can distribute the executable file without the source code, making it harder to reverse engineer.
  6. 6Advantages of InterpreterAn interpreter has the advantage of increased compatibility – your code will run on any computer that has an interpreter available. A Javascript interpreter is included with all web browsers, so the author knows that their code will run on any computer that has a browser, regardless of processor.
  7. 7Advantages of assemblyWhen high level code is converted to machine code, we don’t know exactly how a command will be translated.
speed. But what about something that has to respond as quickly as possible?
    Aeroplane autopilot
    Formula one engine management system
