- 3Output DeviceAny information that displays or prints
- 4Input DeviceIn computing, an input device is a peripheral used to provide data and control signals to an information processing system such as a computer or other information appliance. Examples of input devices include keyboards, mice, scanners, digital cameras and joysticks.
- 5Storage deviceA piece of computer equipment on which information can be stored
- 6SSD (solid state drive)A storage device containing non-volatile flash memory, used in place of a hard disk because of its much greater speed
- 7FireWireA standard high-performance serial bus for connecting digital devices together or to a computer.
- 8RFID (radio frequency identification)A technology that incorporates the use of electromagnetic or electrostatic coupling in the radio frequency (RF) portion of the electromagnetic spectrum to uniquely identify an object, animal, or person.
- 9GPS (global positioning system)A space-based satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather conditions, anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites.
- 10USBA small external flash drive that can be used with any computer that has a USB port.
- 11IP addressA unique string of numbers separated by full stops that identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network.
- 12SD card (secure digital card)An ultra small flash memory card designed to provide high-capacity memory in a small size. SD cards are used in many small portable devices such as digital video camcorders, digital cameras, handheld computers, audio players and mobile phones.
- 13Security KeyA special password that allows you to enable a private network
- 14VoIP ( Voice Over Internet Protocol)A phone service over the Internet. If you have a reasonable quality Internet connection you can get phone service delivered through your Internet connection instead of from your local phone company
- 15CDA combat disc
- 16DVDA type of compact disc able to store large amounts of data, especially high-resolution audiovisual material.
- 17Cloud StorageA model of data storage where the digital data is stored in logical pools, the physical storage spans multiple servers (and often locations), and the physical environment is typically owned and managed by a hosting company.
- 18Open source softwareA software whose source code is available for modification or enhancement by anyone.
- 19Proprietary softwareA software that is owned by an individual or a company (usually the one that developed it). There are almost always major restrictions on its use, and its source code is almost always kept secret.
- 20DMS (document management software)A system (based on computer programs in the case of the management of digital documents) used to track and store documents. It is usually also capable of keeping track of the different versions modified by different users (history tracking).
- 21FirewallA firewall protects a network from unauthorised access
- 22SSID (service set identifier)Identifies network names
- 23WEP (wired equivalent privacy)A security protocol for wireless networks that encrypts transmitted data . The disadvantage is that without any security, your data can be intercepted without difficulty.
- 24WPA (Wi-Fi protected access)A security standard for users of computers equipped with Wi-Fi wireless connection. It is an improvement on and is expected to replace the original Wi-Fi security standard, Wired Equivalent Privacy
- 25WPA2 (wireless protected access 2)WPA2 is a security technology commonly used on Wi-Fi wireless networks. WPA2 replaced the original WPA technology on all certified Wi-Fi hardware since 2006 and is based on the IEEE 802.11i technology standard for data encryption
- 26AESA symmetric block cipher used by the U.S. government to protect classified information and is implemented in software and hardware throughout the world to encrypt sensitive data.
- 27BluetoothA standard for the short-range wireless interconnection of mobile phones, computers, and other electronic devices.
- 28BandwidthA range of frequencies within a given band, in particular that used for transmitting a signal.
- 29WI-FIA facility allowing computers, smartphones, or other devices to connect to the Internet or communicate with one another wirelessly within a particular area
- 30RouterA device that transfers data from one network to another
- 31ModemA combined device for modulation and demodulation, for example, between the digital data of a computer and the analogue signal of a telephone line.
- 32Remote WorkingWhen someone works away from their office
- 33Optical StorageThe storage of data on an optically readable medium. Data is recorded by making marks in a pattern that can be read back with the aid of light, usually a beam of laser light precisely focused on a spinning disc. An older example, that does not require the use of computers, is microform.
- 34Magnetic Storageis the storage of data on a magnetized medium. Magnetic storage uses different patterns of magnetization in a magnetisable material to store data and is a form of non-volatile memory. The information is accessed using one or more read/write heads.
- 35CCTV (closed circuit television)A TV system in which signals are not publicly distributed but are monitored, primarily for surveillance and security purposes. CCTV relies on strategic placement of cameras, and observation of the camera's input on monitors somewhere
- 36Key loggerIs the action of recording (or logging) the keys struck on a keyboard, typically in a covert manner so that the person using the keyboard is unaware that their actions are being monitored.
- 37EthernetA system for connecting a number of computer systems to form a local area network, with protocols to control the passing of information and to avoid simultaneous transmission by two or more systems.
- 38User IDThe unique name you use to identify yourself on eBay and is seen by other eBay users. Your user ID is shown when you buy or sell on eBay or communicate with other members. Other members can't see your real name or other personal information.
- 39DoS (disk operating system)The first widely-installed operating system for personal computers.
- 40Data capture formA method for collecting data
- 41EncryptionThe most effective way to achieve data security. To read an encrypted file, you must have access to a secret key or password that enables you to decrypt it. Unencrypted data is called plain text ; encrypted data is referred to as cipher text.
- 42GUI (graphical user interface)A graphical display in one or more windows containing controls, called components, that enable a user to perform interactive tasks. The user of the GUI does not have to create a script or type commands at the command line to accomplish the tasks.
- 43ForumAn online discussion site where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messages. They differ from chat rooms in that messages are often longer than one line of text, and are at least temporarily archived.
- 44PhishingThe fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers, online.
- 45Radio buttonsAn icon representing one of a set of options, only one of which can be selected at any time.
- 46Passworda string of characters that allows access to a computer, interface, or system
- 47Data userA data user refers to a person involved in accessing and investigating integrated datasets for statistical and research purposes (Endnote 1). This paper focuses on data users accessing integrated datasets created using at least one Commonwealth dataset, for statistical and research purposes. 3.
- 48Information commissionerAn independent official appointed by the Crown. The Commissioner's decisions are subject to the supervision of the Courts and the Information Tribunal.
- 49Peer to peer file transferAllows users to access media files such as books, music, movies, and games using a P2P software program that searches for other connected computers on a P2P network to locate the desired content. The nodes (peers) of such networks are end-user computer systems that are interconnected via the Internet.
- 50NFC (Near field communication)A set of ideas and technology that enables smartphones and other devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into proximity, typically a distance of 10 cm (3.9 in) or less.
