Question Answer
What is one other name for the group 1 metals and why do they need to be stored under oil? The alkali metals and they are stored under oil because they react very rigorously with air and water
Alkali metals react with water to produce hydrogen and a hydroxide. Are alkali metal hydroxides soluble or insoluble? Alkali metals are soluble and form alkaline solutions
As we go down the group the alkali metals become more reactive. Why is this? They become more reactive because the outer shells gets further away from the influence of the nucleus, making it easier for an atom to lose an electron.
Oxidation is the process of losing electrons. Write the equation for the formation of a lithium ion. Li - e- ti Li+
How do the physical properties of group 1 elements generally alter as we go down the periodic table? The melting points get lower, the boiling points get lower and generally (except from potassium) the density goes up
