- 1Where can information be retrieved from?Information can be retrieved from a number of sources for many different purposes. Different sources are suitable for different needs.
Information can come from: files on disks and memory sticks, CD ROMS and DVDs, databases, and websites. - 2What is the disk and memory stick information source?This kind of information is often personal, such as an address book or sets of holiday photographs.
- 3What is the CD ROMS and DVD information source?these can contain encyclopaedias, catalogues, videos, songs, clip art collections and so on.
- 4What is the database information source?Can be used in schools and businesses to contain useful information that can allow staff to quickly find information such as contact details or details of an order.
- 5What is the website information source?They are valuable sources of information. However the information displayed on a website may not be up to date! Or websites may display incorrect information. Websites run by well known organizations or governments can usually be trusted to hold reliable information.
- 6What is application software?Software designed to do a particular job.
- 7What is an operating system?The software that controls the hardware and also runs the programs.
- 8What is a program?The set of step by step instructions that tell the computer hardware what to do.
- 9What is software?The programs used by computers.
- 10What is word processors application software?Can be used for writing assignments, producing letters, keeping notes or writing books and other word processing tasks.
- 11What is desktop publisher application software?Can be used to manipulate text and images to produce posters, leaflets newsletters and other similar documents.
- 12What is presentation software application software?Can be used to produce slides used in teaching or lecturing, and may include video, sound, animations and slide transitions e.g. dissolve, fade etc. Some of the slides may have hyperlinks to other slides within the presentation, other presentations, other programs, music files, websites etc. There may be many possibilities.
- 13What is spreadsheet software application software?Can be used to perform calculations. Provided the formula is correct, the calculations will always be accurate. Models of situations can be undertaken and ‘What if?’ questions can be asked. Charts and graphs can be drawn from the data to illustrate the results of an investigation.
- 14What is database application software?Can be used for storing data which can than then be sorted or searched. Reports can be printed out.
