Hydrogel Chemistry

Niamh Foley English 13 cards

Cards in this deck (13)

  1. 1What is a polymer hydrogel?network of polymer chains that are hydrophilic
  2. 2What is mesh size?he size of the spacing between the individual polymer chains
  3. 3What is physisorption?is a process in which the electronic structure of the atom or molecule is barely perturbed upon adsorption. The fundamental interacting force of physisorption is caused by van der Waals force
  4. 4What is Gas Permeability?the property of solids that allows the passage of a gas through the body in the presence of a pressure differential.
  5. 5What is a micropore?A pore size that is very small. Can allow one molecule through at a time
  6. 6What is mesoporous?is a material containing pores with diameters between 2 and 50 nm
  7. 7What does macroporous mean?is a material containing pores with diameters above 50 nm
  8. 8What does selectivity mean?the quality of carefully choosing something as the best or most suitable. Or a molecule that is selective to a particular active site or pore size
  9. 9What does ionotropic hydrogel mean?Ionotropic gelation is based on the ability of polyelectrolytes to cross link in the presence of counter ions to form hydrogels.
  10. 10What is a polyelectrolyte hydrogel? The mechanical strength and permeability barrier of hydrogels can be improved by the addition of oppositely charged another polyelectrolyte to the ionotropically gelated hydrogel beads. For instance, addition of polycations allows a membrane of polyelectrolyte complex to form on the surface of alginate beads
  11. 11What is the Langmuir adsorption model? The Langmuir adsorption isotherm is used to describe the equilibrium between adsorbate and adsorbent system, where the adsorbate adsorption is limited to one molecular layer at or before a relative pressure of unity is reached.
  12. 12What does the Langmuir model assume?Adsorption occurs at specific binding sites that are localized on the surface of the adsorbent.
All adsorption sites on the surface of the adsorbent are identical.
The surface of the adsorbent is covered with a monolayer of adsorbed molecules.
There is no interaction between the adsorbed molecules on the adsorbent surface.
