Flashcards
ASCII and Unicode
Cards in this deck (5)
- 1What is ASCII?Computers only understand 1 and 0.
This is called ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange).
This allows all computers to understand each other.
ASCII code is where a number represents a character such as 'a' or '@'. - 2What is a character set?A character set is all the characters which are recognised by a computer.
- 3EXAMPLE1) You type in the word 'The'.
2) The computer looks at its value on the ASCII table. 'T' = 84'
'h' = 104
'e' = 101
The computer saves this in the computer memory.
'The' in binary is 01010100 01101000 01100101 - 47 bit ASCIIASCII uses 7 bits to store all the characters needed for the English language.
This gives 128 possible characters.
Extended ASCII uses all 8 bits. This means it can store 256 characters - 5UnicodeUnicode was developed to account for every language in the world.
It uses 16 bits so it has a much larger character set (over 65,000).
