Compression Types - Lossy Vs Lossless
Cards in this deck (4)
- 1Lossy CompressionA method of reducing the file size which involves the discarding of unnecessary data. This type of compression is most commonly used in multimedia applications where the slight reduction in data and quality is not as noticeable and the data can be removed without reducing the effectiveness of the multimedia itself.
Lossy Compression is not commonly used outside of multimedia, for text as an example since the data loss would reduce the effectiveness of the text or important information by removing some of it. - 2Lossless CompressionA method of reducing the file size without the loss of any data in the process. This is normally achieved by noticing patterns in the bytes and bits of the file and saving the pattern instead of all of the individual bits. This type is most often used for text files and zips, where the loss of information would damage the file.
This is not normally used in multimedia because it is less effective as lossy compression but the data loss can be used without problems. - 3Examples of Lossless compression file formatsGIF, ZIP, 7Z,RAR
- 4Examples of Lossy compression file formatsJPEG, others TODO][][
