Physical geography flash cards

Kirat Braich English 28 cards

Cards in this deck (28)

  1. 1Restless Earth What is the core made of ?Solid iron and nickel.
  2. 2Restless Earth What is the mantle made up of ?Semi-molten rock.
  3. 3Restless Earth What are the 2 types of crust ?- Continental
    - Oceanic
  4. 4Restless Earth What is the features of continental crust ?Its thicker and less dense.
  5. 5Restless Earth What are the features of oceanic crust ?Its thinner and more dense.
  6. 6Restless Earth What happens at a destructive margin ?Where 2 plates are moving towards each other e.g. along the east coast of japan.
  7. 7Restless Earth What happens at a constructive margin ?Where two plates are moving away from each other.
  8. 8Restless Earth What happens at a conservative margin ?2 plates are moving sideways past each other.
  9. 9Restless Earth What is the formation of a destructive margin ?When the 2 plates move towards each other, the oceanic plate meets the continental plate, the denser oceanic plate is forced down and subducted and destroyed in the mantle.Destroying the crust.this often creates volcanos and ocean trenches.
Where 2 continental plates meet, the plates smash together but no crust is destroyed.
  10. 10Restless Earth What is the formation of a constructive margin ?As 2 plates move away from each other, magma rises from the mantle to fill the gap and cools creating new crust.
  11. 11Restless Earth What is the formation of a conservative margin ?Where two plates are moving sideways past each other , or moving in the same direction but at different speeds.Crust isn't created or destroyed.
  12. 12Restless Earth How are fold mountains formed ?When tectonic plates collide the sedimentary rocks that have built up between them are folded and forced upwards to form mountains.
  13. 13Restless Earth Where are fold mountains found ?Destructive plate margins and places where there used to be destructive margins. e.g Andes in south america
  14. 14Restless Earth what different combinations of crusts collide to make a fold mountain ?Continental and oceanic
    e.g. Andes in South america
    Continental and Continental
    e.g. Himalayas in Asia
  15. 15Restless Earth Describe a fold mountain ? (4 things)- High mountains
    - Rocky with steep slopes
    - Snow and glaciers in the highest bits
    - Lakes and valleys between mountains
  16. 16Restless Earth Name the 5 things humans use fold mountain areas for ?- Farming
    - Hydro electric power
    - Mining
    - Forestry
    - Tourism
  17. 17Restless Earth Why do humans use fold mountain areas for farming ?Lower slopes are used to grow crops, steep slopes are sometimes terraced to make growing crops easier.
Higher mountains aren't great for growing crops so they're used to graze animals e.g. mountain goats.
  18. 18Restless Earth Why do humans use fold mountain areas for hydro-electric power (HEP) ?Steep sided mountains and high lakes (to store water) make fold mountains ideal for generating hydro-electric power.
  19. 19Restless Earth Why do humans use fold mountain areas for mining ?Fold mountains are a major source of metal ores, so theres a lot of mining going on. The steep slopes make it hard to access the mines, so zig zag roads have been carved out on the sides of some mountains to get to them.
  20. 20Restless Earth Why do humans use fold mountain areas for forestry ?Fold mountain ranges are a good environment to grow some types of tree (e.g. conifers). They're grown on the steep valley slopes and are used for things like fuel, building materials, and to make things like paper and furniture.
  21. 21Restless Earth do humans use fold mountain areas for tourism?Fold mountain areas have spectacular scenery, which attracts tourists.
    - In winter people visit to do sports like skiing, snowboarding and ice climbing.
    - In summers walkers come to enjoy the scenery.
    - Tunnels have been drilled through some fold mountains to make straight fast roads.
    - This improves communications for tourists and people who live in the area as its quicker to get to places.
  22. 22Restless Earth At what plate margins are volcanoes found ?- Constructive
    - Destructive
  23. 23Restless Earth What are Vents ?Cracks in the crust where magma rises.
  24. 24Restless Earth What are Hotspots ?When volcanoes form over parts the mantle that are really hot.
  25. 25Restless Earth Describe a composite volcanoes ?Made up of ash and lava thats erupted, cooled and hardened into layers.
The lava is usually thick and flows slowly. It hardens quickly to form steep-sided volcano.
  26. 26Restless Earth Describe a shield volcano ?Made up of only lava.
The lava is runny. It flows quickly and spreads over a wide area, forming a low flat volcano.
  27. 27Restless Earth Describe a dome volcano ?Made up of only lava.
The lava is thick, it flows slowly and hardens quickly, forming a steep sided volcano.
  28. 28Restless Earth How do scientists predict earthquakes ?- Tiny earthquakes
    - Escaping gas
    - Changes in shape of volcano
    All mean eruptions are likely.
