  1. 1what is a destructive plate marginwhere an oceanic plate meets a continental plate the denser oceanic plate is forced down into the mantle and destroyed.
often creates a volcano and oceanic trenches
where two continental plates meet the plates smash together but no crust is destroyed.
  2. 2what is a constructive marginsconstructive margins are where two plates are moving from each other e.g at mid Atlantic ridge. magma (molten rock) rises from the mantle to fill the gap and cools, creating new crust.
  3. 3what is a conservative plate marginconservative margins are where two plates are moving sideways past each other, or are moving in the same direction but at different speeds, e.g along the west coast of usa. crust isn't created or destroyed
  4. 4how are fold mountains formedwhen tectonic plates collide the sedimentary rocks build up and fold and forced up to create mountains.
so fold mountains are formed at destructive plate margins and places where there used to be destructive plate margins
you get fold mountains where a continental plate and a oceanic plat collide
    e.g andes
  5. 5how are fold mountains usedfarming, hydro electric power, mining, forestry, tourism
  6. 6fold mountain case studythe alps
    central Europe
stretches across Austria france Italy Germany
the alps is used for farming skiing snowboarding etc
people have adapted by trees and man made defences are used to protect avalanches and rock slides
  7. 7three different parts of volcanoesshield volcanoes are only made up of lava the lava is runny it flows quickly and spreads over a wide area
dome volcanoes are made up of only lava lava is thick and flows slowly hardens quickly creating a steep sides volcano
composite cone is made up of ash and lava that's erupted cooled and hardened into layers
    three different parts of volcanoes
  8. 8scientists can monitor and predict before and earth quakelook out for things such as tiny earth quakes escaping gas and changes in shape of the volcano e.g bulges in the land where magma has built up
  9. 9impacts and responses of a volcanic eruptionprimary: vegetation and farm land destroyed
    people die
    schools hospitals and airports destroyed
    villages and homes destroyed
large areas covered in volcanic material
  10. 10impacts and responses of a volcanic erruptionsecondary impacts: tourists stay away
    businesses destroyed
    economy destrupted
    population decline
    volcanic ash improves soil fertility
  11. 11impacts and responses of a volcanic erruptionimmediate responses
    people were evacuated
    shelters were built
temporary infrastructure built e.g roads and electricity
emergency aid sent from other countries
    local emergency services provide support
  12. 12impacts and responses of a volcanic erruptionlong term responses-
    a risk map was created
new docks airports and houses re built
    predicitions increased for future eruptions
  13. 13how does a earthquake occurearthquakes occur when two plates jerk past each other and send out shock waves these vibrations are the earth quake
the shock wave spreads out from the focus (the point where the earth quake starts)
weak earthquakes happen often but large ones are rare
  14. 14how do we measure earthquakesthe richter scale- measures the energy released by an earthquake called the magnitude
    measured on a seismometer
    scale 1-9
the mercali scale measures the effects of an earthquake
effects are measured by eye witnesses
  15. 15what is a tsunamia tsunami is when a serious of enormous waves caused when huge amounts of water get displaced.
  16. 16hydraulic actionthe force of water breaks rock particles away from the river channel
  17. 17abrasioneroded rocks picked up by the river scrape and rub against the channel wearing It away most erosion happens by abrasion
  18. 18attritioneroded rocks picked up by the river smash into each other and break into smaller fragments
the edges get rounded off as they rub together
  19. 19solutionriver water dissolves some types of rock
    e.g chalk and limestone
  20. 20depositiondeposition is where a river drops the eroded material its transporting
it happens when the river slows down and looses velocity
resons: the volume of water in the river
    the amount of eroded material
    the river reaches its mouth
