Separating mixtures flashcards

Cards in this deck (10)
- 1SievingSieving is a process by which fine particles are separated from bigger particles by using a sieve. It is used in flour mill or at construction sites. In flour mill, impurities like husks and stones are removed from wheat. Pebbles and stones are removed from sand by sieving.

- 2Evaporationis great for separating a mixture (solution) of a soluble solid and a solvent. The process involves heating the solution until the solvent evaporates (turns into gas) leaving behind the solid residue.

- 3Distillationmethod used for the separation of components of a mixture containing two miscible liquids that boil without decomposition and have sufficient difference in their boiling points. The distillation process involves heating a liquid to its boiling points, and transferring the vapors into the cold portion of the apparatus, then condensing the vapors and collecting the condensed liquid in a container

- 4Decantationprocess of separation of liquid from solid and other immiscible (non-mixing) liquids, by removing the liquid layer at the top from the layer of solid or liquid below. The process can be carried out by tilting the mixture after pouring out the top layer. This process can also be used to separate two liquids that do not mix with each other for e.g., oil and wate

- 5Crystallizationprocess through which the atoms/molecules of a substance arrange themselves in a well-defined three-dimensional lattice and, consequently, minimize the overall energy of the system.

- 6Filtrationcommon method of separating an insoluble solid from a liquid.Filtration is used in water treatment plants, where water from rivers is filtered to remove solid particles.

- 7Magnetismis ideal for separating mixtures of two solids with one part having magnetic properties. Some metals like iron, nickel and cobalt

- 8Paper ChromatographyIt is used to identify chemicals (coloring agents) in foods or inks. For example, if a scientist wants to know how many substances are in a particular blob of ink, paper chromatography can be used. blob of ink is smeared on a special paper called filter paper. The paper is placed in a trough of solvent. The solvent used depends on the chemicals in the ink blob. As the paper gets soaked upwards, it attracts the various chemicals in the ink blob.

- 9Centrifugingcentrifugation is the process of separation of insoluble materials from a liquid where normal filtration does not work well. like in washing machines to squeeze water from wet clothes
