Question Answer
Anti-virus software protects your computer from viruses. How does it do this? Scans downloaded files before running them. Scans attachments on emails before downloading them to your computer.
What does anti-virus software do if it finds a virus? Quarantines it ready for you to decide whether to remove it or not. Note: Quarantine simply means to isolate (or move away) from your system files so that the virus does not spread to other programs and files.
How can you make sure that you use anti-virus software properly? Run scheduled scans (e.g. every week) Set your anti-virus to automatically scan downloaded files) Download updates for your anti-virus software to keep up to date with the latest viruses.
What does a firewall actually do? Controls which programs on your computer can send and receive data across a network (e.g. the Internet)
What is the danger of not having a firewall set up on your computer? Data can be sent into your computer without you knowing. This could be malicious (e.g. a virus!)
When do we normally have to unblock programs on a firewall? When you install a game onto your computer and then want to play a friend over the Internet. When you install a program which needs to access the Internet to download updates.
How can you make sure that you are using your firewall safely? Keep it switched on! Make sure that you only install trusted software. Check your firewall settings to make sure that only programs you trust are unblocked.
