These are the theories used in Media when answering a question on audiences .

Uses and gratifications Claiming that audiences use media for a range of different purposes (diversion, personal identity, surveillance,personal relationships)
Two-step theory an opinion is taken on by the audience and then that information is shared
Hypodermic syringe outdated message is injected into audiences brains (teenagers are dangerous)
Moral panic sense of anxiety towards an issue through the mass media (dangers of social networking)
Reception theory individualise their understanding. Meaning does not exist until created by the audience.
Marxist theory Forcing ideals and ideologies upon audiences
hegemonic theory developed from Marxist theory. common sense and 'go along with it' attitude to keep society working properly -recognise inequalities and injustices
Mulvey Male gaze / feminist / post-feminist theory (media created with white heterosexual male in mind)
