theorists applied to practice
Cards in this deck (11)
- 1Bronfenbrenner Ecological System Theory Applied to practisepractitioners aim to build strong relationships with parents.
provide parents with updates about their child's development-strengths and weaknesses.
create opportunities for parents to do with their children.
lend parent resources and materials such as books.
take an interest in what the child is doing at home too.
create links with the local community for the children to do activities in places such as allotments. - 2Bandura- Social Learning Theory Applied to practiceMake sure that practitioners are role modeling the type of behavior that you wish the children to repeat.
Need to recognize that children can pick up unwanted behaviors by observing adults.
Remember that the age of the children will effect the skills they are able to learn. - 3Pavlov- Classical Conditioning TheoryPractitioners need to ensure positive behavior is rewarded and that children know why they are being rewarded as it is a type of reinforcement.
ensure negative behaviors are not reinforced instead punished- time out.
associate positive behaviors with positive experiences to encourage the child to be more independent. - 4Skinner- Operant Conditiong Theoryremember that positive reinforcements work better when they are provided at the time of wanted behavior.
Not to use reinforcements all the time.
Make sure that practitioners are aware of the expected behaviors of the age.
Make sure children understand the concept of rewards- sticker charts allows them to understand the secondary reinforcement. - 5Piaget-Theory of Cognitive Developmentpractitioners need to provide opportunities for children to explore a range of materials, such as sand and water which help to develop concepts.
provide role play opportunities to help children ac out their own experiences.
Do not mock children- some statements to them are logical.
Be aware of children's development and link it to the stage of development they should be at. - 6Vygotsky- Zone of Proximal DevelopmentPractitioners need to be able to identify accurately a child's current level of skill, knowledge and reasoning- done through observation
plan for the next steps for individual children.
Practitioners need to work closely with children, using sensitive interaction and questioning so that children can be supported to acquire a new skill, level of reasoning or piece of knowledge. - 7Athey's Schema Theory- Cognitive DevelopmentObserve children at play and identify the schema they may be using.
consider resources and activities that may support children's exploration of common schema's.
Film children playing using the different schema's and talk/ share these with children.
Talk to parents about their child's interests at home, so they can build activities around these interests. - 8Chomsky- LAD- Language Acquisition Devicethink about whether children have sufficient time talking with the practitioner as well as other children.
Speak to children in a way that is grammatically correct.
Do not correct children's language, repeat it back to them in the correct way - 9Erikson- Psychosocial Theory of PersonalityEnsure that children have the opportunity to be independent and take risks.
do no over criticise children as this can lead to them feeling as if they're not good enough.
give children confidence boosts such as "i love your smile"
Help parents be aware that unconditional support and love is essential and that although they may wish for their child to succeed, the may make them feel insecure. - 10Kohlburg- Moral Development TheoryRecognise that children are likely to follow the examples set by adults.
Make sure your reactions to incidents and unwanted behaviors are not aggressive.
Expect that although children may be able to tell you the settings rules, they may not be able to resist temptation - 11Bowlby& Ainsworth- Attachment TheoryMake sure that each child in the setting has a key person
Find out about the child’s experiences of separation, recognising that children who have previously been distressed may take longer to settle in a build a relationship with you.
Build a relationship with the children before their parents leave them for the first time
Work closely with parents to provide continuity of care
