Flashcards
network attacks
Cards in this deck (15)
- 1VirusesA computer virus is a software program that is designed to copy itself over and over again and to attach itself to files and programs. Just as bacteria and micro-organisms can infect humans.
- 2TrojanA program that appears to be a harmless application but will run in the background doing something malicious.
- 3Wormbehaves in a similar way to a virus, but it does not necessarily harm files. Instead, it tries to copy itself so many times that the whole system runs out of resources and crashes.
- 4Adwareforces your browser to display unwanted pop-up advertisements. Clicking these could result in more infections.
- 5Spywarestays hidden and is designed to spy on your computer, looking for personal information, passwords and so on.
For example, a keylogger will record keys you press on a keyboard. - 6ScarewareTricks you into thinking your computer is infected so they can scam you.
- 7Ransomwareencrypts critical files and data, making them unusable. Eventually it presents the user with a ransom, demanding money be sent to the attackers to unlock the system or files.
- 8Rootkitsgive other people permissions and access to your computer, allowing them to take it over remotely and do whatever they like.
- 9Phishingfraudulent attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by disguising as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. E.G. emails, text messages.
- 10Social engineeringtricking someone into divulging information or taking action, usually through technology. The idea behind social engineering is to take advantage of a potential victim's natural tendencies and emotional reactions.
- 11poor network policyWhere a network does not have security rules in place for users to follow.
- 12Brute Force attackWhere a program is used to find a password by trying all possible combinations of characters until the correct one is obtained.
- 13DDoSbombarding the server over and over again with requests until it crashes
- 14SQL injectionWhere SQL code is entered as a data input. Many databases use SQL code to interrogate the data and maintain the structure. SQL code can be inputted as data, which can cause errors or unintended operations.
