Question Answer
Aim Investigate the role of the hippocampus in spacial memory and navigation: To see whether the brain is capable of changing in response to environmental situation Identify the specific role of the hippocampus To demonstrate structural changes in the human brain
Sample: 16, right handed male taxi drivers who had passed the knowledge mean age 44 (32-62) mean experience was 14.3 years mean training time was 2 years Opportunity sample Control group: 16 non-taxi drivers drawn from a pool of 50 men matched pairs records were held in MIRs data base.
VBM Voxel is a volume pixel used to measure the volume of a certain part of the brain automatic procedure
pixel counting MIR 'sliced through' hippocampus creates a 2D picture analysed by one person who counted the pixels in each slice (measured volume by adding the pixels in each slice together) person was blind to whether they were a taxi driver or not
Results: VBM Significantly more grey matter in both left and right posterior hippocampi of taxi drivers controls had more grey matter in the anterior of hippocampus
Results: pixel counting total volume did not differ in control, right hippocampus anterior and body were larger Taxi drivers posterior in both were larger
Correlations Positive: time spent as a taxi driver and the posterior of the RH Negative: time and volume of the anterior of the LH and RH
