Semester 2 Science Flashcards Continued

Ariana Hannaford English 5 cards

Cards in this deck (5)

  1. 1Semester 2 Science Flashcards ContinuedSemester 2 Science Flashcards Continued
  2. 2Colloids:Colloids:
-Mixtures made of particles smaller than a suspension but bigger than a solution e.g milk
-To test if it is a colloid, add water and shine a light at it, you should be able to see it on the other side
-Particles spread out in a substance known as the 'Dispersion Medium'
-The light passes through a colloid because the particles refract (shrink)
-Types of colloids: emulsions (liquid in a liquid where one won't dissolve the other)
  3. 3Separating Insoluble Substances:Magnetic Separation:
-Allows the separation of a mixture of 2 solids
-Metals such as iron and nickel to be removed from non-magnetic items
    -E.g mining and recycling
    Gravity Separation:
-Uses gravity to separate heavier substances from a suspension
-Heavier particles sink to the bottom
-E.g panning for gold and pouring off cooking water from vegetables
-Decantation: A type of gravity separation that lets suspensions of solids or liquids separate naturally-top layer poured or scraped off
    Sieving:
-A barrier with holes in it- only small solid objects can get through
-Used to separate mixtures with solid and solid or solid and liquid
-E.g cooking (pasta strainer) and fishing (net)
    Filtration:
-Acts like a sieve, but the holes are much smaller
-They are extremely fine, allowing only very small particles to pass through
-E.g pool filter and air con
    Centrifuging:
    -Separates mixtures by spinning
-E.g washing machines and blood tests
  4. 4Separating Soluble Substances:Chromatography:
-A process that separates a mixture by making it move through another substance like a paper strip (paper chromatography)
-The chemicals move up the paper
-More soluble, more travel, less soluble, less travel
-All the chemicals are trying to separate and are attracted to the paper by different amounts
    Evaporation- Crystallisation:
-Evaporation is the process where heat causes a liquid to change into a gas
-Leaves behind any solutes that were dissolved in the liquid
-Does not have to boil to evaporate, because liquids evaporate at all temperatures above freezing
-Solutes left behind form into crystals
-A solution may have unwanted substances that dissolved in it as well, known as impurities, such as dust
-Crystallisation: formation of crystals as a dissolved substance solidifies, making a jigsaw formation
-The hotter it is, the quicker the evaporation
    Distillation:
-Involves evaporation and condensation to separate substances
-Liebig Condenser: turns gas into a liquid
  5. 5Melting and Boiling Points of Common Substances:How to Work Out the State at Room Temperature:
    -Room temperature is 24/25 degrees
    -Absolute Zero: -273 degrees
-Freezing Point of Water: 0 degrees
-Boiling Point of Water: 100 degrees
    -Big negative numbers= gas
-Small negative or positive numbers= liquid
    -Big positive numbers= solid
