- 1MASH-UPThe term mash-up refers to a new breed of Web-based applications created by hackers and programmers (typically on a volunteer basis) to mix at least two different services from disparate, and even competing, Web sites.
- 2IFRAMEShort for intraframe, a video compression method used by the MPEG standard. In a motion sequence, individual frames of pictures are grouped together and played back so that the viewer registers the videos spatial motion
- 3APIAPI, an abbreviation of application program interface, is a set of routines, protocols, and tools for building software applications. The API specifies how software components should interact and APIs are used when programming graphical user interface (GUI) components
- 4advantages of external codeAPIs allow programmers to create programs much faster because there not having to rewrite code and ‘reinvent the wheel’.
APIs/external libraries can be more secure because often whole teams of developers maintain and update the code.
External libraries simplify complex areas of coding so that non specialist programmers are still able to interact with devices that would otherwise require a high level of expertise to interact with. - 5disadvantages of external codeSecurity issues – you don’t have control of the code so you don’t know how secure it it.
Fixing bugs in external code sources is often difficult/impossible as you didn't write the code so you have to debug someone else’s code.
Licencing Issues – some APIs require the programmer to pay for a licence , especially is the API is being used for commercial purposes.
Many small projects are not kept up to date and so might not work with future versions of your programming language.
Many libraries are poorly documented, meaning that they are difficult to use.
