Lecture 4 Reading

Emma Smith Cognitive Psychology of Sleep Undergraduate English 4 cards

Cards in this deck (4)

  1. 1COMPULSORY Born and Wilhelm (2012) - System consolidation of memory during sleepDifferent memory stores prevent catastrophic interference.
Synchrony of up and down states necessary for permanent neocortical traces?
    Impairment after ripple suppression.
    SWS increases stability (odour-based reactivation).
Criteria selecting memories for consolidation unknown: memory and salience are 2.
  2. 2COMPULSORY Conte and Ficca (2013) - Caveats on psychological models of sleep and memory: a compass in an overgrown scenarioMemory is reconstructive, not reproductive.
Directed forgetting during wake extended over sleep.
Sleep creates false memories using DRM paradigm.
Central and peripheral processing of emotions may undergo different processes during sleep (Cairney vs Payne)
    Better transitive inference.
Better able to gain explicit from implicit
    - early, not late
    Better integration.
Walker and Stickgold's 2 stage model:
    1) SWS = stabilizing
    2) REM = integrating
REM awakening = significantly better creative thinking.
    Need a more integrative literature.
  3. 3Ellenbogen et al. (2006)1) Null hypothesis: benefits are just passage of time
    - disproved by wake vs sleep groups
    2) Passive protection: legacy from Jenkins and Dallenbach (1924)
    - Payne et al. (2008) wake first/sleep first
    3) Permissive consolidation: sleep promotes conditions for consolidation, but nothing else (Wixted, 2004)
    - cannot be distinguished from active without neuroimaging and neurophysiology
    4) Active consolidation: sleep actively contributes to memory consolidation
    - Associations with specific aspects of sleep e.g. split-half paradigm (Wagner et al., 2001), hippocampal replay in rats (Wilson and McNaughton et al., 1994)
  4. 4Lewis and Durrant (2011)Standard model of memory consolidation cannot account for gist extraction, rather than veridical representation.
Overlapping replay selectively strengthens shared elements, allowing for the abstraction of gist.
