Flashcards
Samuel and Bryant
Cards in this deck (8)
- 1BackgroundPiaget believed that in the pre-operational stage (between 18 months and 7 years) children were unable to conserve.
- 2AimTo investigate whether young children demonstrate a better grasp of conservation if they are asked one question instead of two
- 3Participants252 children from Devon. They were split into 4 groups of 63, for their age (5 years 3 months - 8 years 3 months) and then were split into 3 groups of 21, depending on their experimental condition
- 4What were the conservation tasks?Volume : water in a beaker
Number: coins in a row
Mass: plasticine - 5Experimental Conditions?Standard: asked pre and post transformation question
One question: saw transformation and then asked question
Fixed array: did not see transformation and then asked question - 6ResultsMean number of errors
Standard: 5 years = 8.5, 8 years = 1.7
One Question: 5 years = 7.3 8 years=1.3
Fixed Array: 5 years=8.6 8 years=3.3 - 7More findingsThe most errors were made on the the VOLUME task and on the FIXED ARRAY condition. The least number of errors were made on the NUMBER task and in the ONE QUESTION condition
- 8ConclusionChildren can conserve in the pre-operational stage (disproves Piaget) But the ability to conserve increases with age. Children perform better if they are asked one question once they have seen the transformation.
