Question Answer
Dramatic irony. Shows the dangers of Birling's capitalistic ways. "unsinkable, absolutely unsinkable."
Birling is taking an individualist, capitalist point of view about personal responsibility. "a man has to mind his own business and look after himself and his own"
Mr Birling is trying to gain power over the inspector. "You'll apologize at once ... I'm a public man"
"massively" silences Birling with a put down. INSPECTOR [massively] - "Public men, Mr. Birling, have responsibilities as well as privileges."
Final delivery of Priestly's social message. Also links to WW2. "We are members of one body... if men will not learn that lesson, then they will be taught it in fire and blood and anguish."
Birling hasn't learned his lesson. "we've been had ... it makes all the difference."
Sheila crucially understands the importance of the Inspector. "Why - you fool - he knows."
Mrs. Birling is trying to use her wealth, power and influence to intimidate the Inspector. "You know, of course, that my husband was Lord Mayor"
Eric has also realized the importance of the situation, and has learned from the Inspector's wise words. "Whoever that chap was, the fact remains that I did what I did."
Gerald hasn't changed his attitude and doesn't take responsibility for his actions. He forgets how poorly he treated Sheila and Daisy/Eva. "What about this ring?"
