Cards in this deck (5)
- 1Demographic Transition Model: Stage 1High Stationary
- Death rate: High, diseases and famine, conflict and a lack of clean water.
- Birth rate: High, lack of birth control and low marriage age.
- Rate of natural increase: Low - the total population stays low as the high death rate cancels out the high birth
- Examples: Few places are in stage 1, only remote tribes in the Tropical rainforest. - 2Demographic Transition Model: Stage 2Early Expanding
- Death rate: Falling, improved medicine and cleaner water, better food and improved sanitation
- Birth rate: High, lack of birth control and low age of marriage for women
- Rate of natural increase: High - the total population increases rapidly as less people are dying, but the birth rate is still high.
- Examples: Bangladesh and Nigeria - 3Demographic Transition Model: Stage 3Late Expanding
- Death rate: Falling, improving food and diet and better sanitation.
- Birth rate: Falling, women are staying in education and getting married later, and birth control is available.
- Rate of natural increase: High - the population continues to grow as the birth rates are still higher then the death rates, but it is beginning to slow down as birth rates are falling.
- Examples: India, Brazil, Mexico - 4Demographic Transition Model: Stage 4Low Stationary
- Death rate: Low, high standards of medical care, healthy lifestyles and excellent sanitation services.
- Birth rate: Low, high cost of bringing up children, women choosing to have a career then children.
- Rate of natural increase: Very low/Stable - with low birth and death rates, there is little, or no, natural increase in the population.
- Examples: USA, France, Denmark - 5Demographic Transition Model: Stage 5Declining
- Death rate: Rising, greater proportion of the population is now elderly, so the death rate is rising.
Birth rate: Very low, remains low due to lifestyle changes - more people are choosing to have fewer children in later life.
Rate of natural increase: Negative - the total population begins to decline slowly as their is a higher death rate than birth rate.
Examples: China, Russia, Germany.
This stage wasn't originally on the model bu they added it to show recent developments in population change.
